Phragmipedium lindenii is a ladyslipper orchid without a slipper. Instead of a slipper, there is an extra petal where the slipper would normally be. There is also an extra anther, which grows straight into the stigma. The flower is thus self-pollinating.

This species grows in bright light in a wide variety of climates. I found this specimen in a semi-arid scrubland near my home in Baños, Ecuador.

This painting was the subject of the "Orchids in Art" feature of the July 2002 issue of Orchids, the magazine of the American Orchid Society.
